Sights in Downtown Denver

Downtown Denver is full of interesting scenes.  I lived in Denver for the first 18 years of my life.  At that time my mother insisted that I wear a skirt or dress whenever we went there.  It was the proper thing to wear.  That was an age when women and girls wore white gloves when they went out to nice places.

The first time I wore pants there was when I was working at the Denver Theater in the concession stand.  My uniform was black satin pants and a jacket of black satin with white lapels.  The only time I remember dressing differently was when the theater had a special premier showing of a new film.  Each of the girls working in concessions wore formals and the theater paid for us to have our hair done.  How fun for us.

The dome of the Colorado Capital is covered with gold--celebrating the extensive gold mining that provided income in the state's early years.

The building in the center of this photo is the Denver City Hall.  It is about 2 or 3 blocks directly west of the State Capital.  During the Christmas season, this building was lit in seasonal colors and there were displays of lighted trees, Santa's sleigh and reindeer among other things on the lawn.  As I was growing up, cars from throughout the area would slowly drive by to see the lights.  One night each season that road was closed so photographers could capture good pictures of the lights.

Modern day buildings, all made of glass and colored panels, can't compete with the artistic designs on buildings constructed in the 1880s to 1920s.

This is the Daniels and Fishers tower.  In the 1950s and 60s, it was the tallest building in town, maybe tallest west of the Mississippi River.  John's high school class visited the tower on their senior sneak trip.  At that time, it was possible to go out in the open area at the top of the tower.

Isn't the iron work on these windows beautiful?

I think these lampposts are also great.

We walked through the black and white cube display of really unusual statues made up of an assortment of regular objects: canoes, cars, train engines and other strange things.

We took the light rail from our apartment to downtown and back.  This shows the stop where we boarded the train to return to the apartment.
